Addison Jones is only the second African-American female President of Student Government Association (SGA). But besides that, she’s still unlike other students.

She is currently a senior majoring in public health with a minor in general business. Jones believes her personality is what makes he r unique.

“I am a very fun and caring person, but I also have a business to me,” she said.

Last spring, during SGA elections, Jones had no idea she would win. Jones was only sure she would run for an executive position. She had only been on campus for a year and no one else was stepping up for President.

“I just said ‘Hey, I believe in myself,’” Jones said. “I think I can do the job so why not run for the position? It’s a big task, but I love challenging myself, so I just took on the role.”

Today, Jones certainly believes she is taking on that challenge. She knows there are plenty of eyes on her now that she’s SGA president, especially from the university administration.

“I feel like I am the mini administration,” she said. “Making sure I am communicating with them [administration] enough to communicate back to the students.”

Her goal as SGA President is to change the relationship between SGA and students on campus.

“In the past SGA wasn’t really known amongst students,” Jones said. “I really want to push the Senate to be there to support students and also with faculty and staff on making sure they’re diverse; meeting the needs of students.”

As a student, Jones’ goals are to graduate college, get her master’s in high school administration or management, and get her doctoral degree in order to one day work in a hospital as a CEO. She already believes she has accomplished a lot, especially after graduating with her high school diploma and associate’s degree from Cedar Hill Collegiate High School. Besides being involved with SGA, Jones is involved in other organizations.

“I created my own organization, called PEARLS, which stands for Pretty, Educated, And Respectable Ladies,” she said. “This year we took in freshmen young ladies, and they were assigned to a mentor. We’ve also attended the AVID period in Commerce Middle School, where we tutor the kids in the core subjects they have.”

Outside of school related activities, Jones loves finding new movies on Netflix.

“If I’m not doing homework or anything related to my organization, I’m watching any movie,” she said. “I love to eat, I’ve been having to cook this semester so being creative and finding new things to cook is kind of what I do with my time.”

Growing up she was involved in school. She was even a cheerleader in middle school and founded PEARLS at her high school as well. Jones also considers herself very family orientated. She has a 21 year old brother and has both parents in her life.

“We have the big family gatherings during the holidays,” she said.
Overall, many of Jones’ peers believe she stands out among other students with her accomplishments. She plans to graduate in Aug. 2019 and wants students to know that she is here to listen to them.

“You [students] are the main function of our organization,” Jones said. “Anytime you need to come to my office, send me an email so we can set up a time to meet.”

Jones also invites all to the SGA meetings on Wednesdays at the Student Center in Legacy A and B and to stop by the SGA spot at the tailgate before the Lions football game on Saturday, Sept. 22. You can contact Addison Jones via email to ajones94@leomail.tamuc.edu
